Rebuilding of the Temple

Prof. J.S. Malan, University of the North, South Africa

Summary: The Temple Institute in Jerusalem is making rapid progress with preparations for the rebuilding of the Jewish temple.

Orthodox Jews are highly upset because their access to the Temple Mount will be further restricted by peace initiatives between Israel and the Palestinian authorities. After the Israeli victory in the 1967 war, control of the Temple Mount with its two famous mosques was transferred to a Muslim committee, the Wakf, by the former Israeli minister of defence, Moshe Dayan. The Muslims have since then built two more mosques on this site, as a result of which the southern wall of the Temple Mount show increasing signs of collapse.

The number of Jews entering the Temple Mount is restricted because the present Al Aqsa Intifada erupted here in September 2000 when Jewish leaders visited the area. There is also great concern among Jews because the Muslims as excavating the area for their building projects, and in the process they are destroying valuable archaeological artefacts dating back to the first and second temple eras.

The Bible refers to very important events that will occur here in the end-time. The third temple will be built here after Israel has concluded a covenant with the Antichrist, or false messiah (Dan. 9:27; Jn. 5:43). In the middle of the tribulation period the Antichrist will declare himself to be God in this temple (2 Thes. 2:4). He will cause an image of himself to be erected in the temple and force all the citizens of his global empire to worship the image. Those who refuse will be executed (Rev. 13:14-15).

Only then will the eyes of Israeli’s be opened to the fact that he is a false messiah who deceived them. After breaking the covenant that they concluded with him 3˝ years earlier, the Antichrist will order the killing of all Jews. That will be the beginning of the last 3˝ years of “great tribulation” (Mt. 24:15-22). This dark time of “Jacob’s trouble” (Jer. 30:7) will be ended by the Second Coming of Christ on the highest point of the Mount of Olives which lies to the east of the Temple Mount:

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with great glory” (Mt. 24:29-30).

“And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east” (Zech. 14:4).

From the Mount of Olives Jesus will cross the Kidron valley and pass through the East Gate (which is at present still shut) to the Temple Mount (Ezek. 44:1-2). The Temple Mount is part of Mount Zion where the Lord Jesus will restore the fallen throne of David (Acts 15:16-17) and rule the world from Jerusalem during the Millennium (Jer. 3:17; Is. 2:2-4; Zech. 8:22). At the beginning of the Millennium the fourth temple will be built in Jerusalem to call into remembrance the atoning work of Jesus as the Lamb of God (Ezek. 40–44).

It is obvious that dramatic and most meaningful events which will affect the entire world, will happen in Jerusalem in the near future. The first set of events will be associated with the greatest spiritual deception of all time and manifest as the appearing, following and worship of the Antichrist. When he is still on the peak of his power Christ will come and destroy him by the brightness of His coming (2 Thes. 2:8; Rev. 19:19-20).

The orthodox Jews are presently laying the table for the Antichrist, as the initiative for the rebuilding of the temple is in the sign of the continued rejection of Jesus’ once for all sacrifice for the sins of the whole world (Jn. 1:29; Heb. 10:10). That is the reason why the Antichrist will use the third temple to falsely declare himself to be God. Mike Oppenheimer wrote a book on the third temple with the apt title of: “A Home for the Antichrist.” Here the Jews will worship the one who comes in his own name and exalts himself above the true God of heaven.

The Temple Institute

The Temple Institute in Jerusalem has already made more than 60% of the vessels, furniture and other item needed for the resuming of the temple service. In their statement below they are asking support for their project. What they say about the status of biblical Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is absolutely true, also their comments on the threat posed by Islam. However, the danger in their campaign is the implicit and continued rejection of Jesus as the Messiah of Israel and Saviour of the nations. For this reason, Christians cannot support their cause. The Institute’s director says:

“The time to make a clear statement on behalf of the God of Israel and the Holy Temple is at hand! On behalf of the Temple Institute, we turn to you from Jerusalem, the place God has chosen, with a request that you be numbered among the supporters of our holy work, and thus ensure that the vision of the Holy Temple, the centre of mankind’s relationship with God, can become a reality in our time. The prophets of Israel all foresaw that the day will come when the Holy Temple will be rebuilt, and will once again be the spiritual focus of the entire world. As Isaiah states, “For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

“As you are well aware, these are days of trouble for Israel – days of severe tests, many of which relate directly to the place of our Holy Temple. The Muslim Wakf, no longer satisfied with merely destroying remnants from the Holy Temple, have embarked upon the next stage of their campaign. Having seen that none arose to stop them, they are now planning on constructing another mosque on the site of the Holy Temple, in order to permanently change the status of the Mountain and the status of Jerusalem. Once again, we are witnessing the destruction of the Holy Temple.

“Do you realise that Jerusalem was never the capital of any people in the world, other than the Jewish people, and never an Arab capital? The same word “Jerusalem” which appears in the Bible over 700 times does not appear in the Koran even once. And yet today, the Higher Islamic Commission of Jerusalem declared that ‘there will be no peace or stability in the region or the world without the return of occupied Jerusalem as an Arab and Islamic capital of the sacred Palestinian state.’ Their declaration stated that the Christian occupation of Christian holy places in Jerusalem must end as well. Arafat will not relinquish control over the Temple Mount. Furthermore, the Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Sabri, who denies that the holy temple ever existed, said that they would not allow the false claims by Jews to pass.

“At the Temple Institute, we respond to this challenge with mammoth efforts to stem the tide of desecration. With thanks to God, the Institute continues to make great strides forward in Temple development, research, awareness, and physical preparation. In the past year, the Temple Institute has reached an important milestone: We have completed the three most central vessels  for Temple service. The golden Menorah, the Incense Altar, and the Table of the Showbread have been completed in all their glory and magnificence, and these vessel
