The Sin of Homosexuality

An increasing phenomenon in the modern world is the rapid expansion of the number of homosexual (gay) persons in societies, as well as the condoning of this lifestyle by many governments and churches. It is regarded as a hereditary trait which, in itself, is not sin. For that reason, gay people are seldom confronted about their immoral behaviour.

However, homosexual and lesbian traits are not hereditary as God did not create any person in this way. It is an indictment against our Creator to make allegations of this nature. In research in genetics, no gay genes have ever been found in any person. A disposition of this nature is clearly the result of learned behaviour.

Maladaptation of this nature often starts very early in a child’s life. During the years before puberty there should be a very close tie between a girl and her mother and a boy and his father. Each one of them uses the parent of his or her own gender as a role model. The father is a hero in the eyes of the boy and he often boasts of his father’s strength and cleverness. The girl rejoices in her mother and imitates her.

Children are often neglected or even rejected because of their parents’ lack of love, long working hours, drinking, partying, intolerance and aggression towards children, extended absence because of sport and recreation, or the permanent absence of one parent due to divorce. Such a child becomes lonely and socially disoriented, and then easily enters into an alternative relationship with an older person of the same gender. That person then becomes a surrogate father or surrogate mother to the child and it is often just there where an unnatural relationship starts.

Natural friendships among pre-adolescent children should be concluded between persons of the same age and gender groups – boys with boys and girls with girls. It is unnatural when such children develop intimate friendships with much older children, as a gay relationship can result form this. A Form 8 child has nothing to do with a Form 4 child, and it would be unnatural for them to become intimate friends.

After puberty (12 to 14 years) the child becomes conscious of the opposite sex. The daughter then develops an admiration for her father and also closer ties with him, and the boy with his mother. These ties should be natural and spontaneous. The child must never be shocked by his or her parents, or be rejected by them, as that will impede the development of a normal relationship with a person of the opposite sex. If there is not a good relationship with a parent of the opposite sex, the child, like in the phase before puberty, may develop ties with an older person of the same sex. Today, there are so many bad friends available who have become socially derailed, that children can easily become involved in an intimate relationship with a person of the same sex. Sooner or later, they also find sexual gratification in that relationship. In this way a child becomes gay – he or she was not born with this propensity.

In the normal development of a child, he or she must be heterosexual, which means that the boy or girl should be naturally attracted to the opposite sex. The association with members of your own gender group will, like before puberty, continue but that will have no bearing on biological desires. The boy’s developing manhood must be fully realised, but he must also have the desire to a friendship with a girl. Likewise, the girl’s developing femininity must coincide with a natural desire to have a boyfriend – not a mannish girlfriend.

It is not, as some people might think, a gay demon that besets a child when he or she does not develop normal, heterosexual relationships. Consequently, this problem cannot be solved by exorcism. This problem should be understood for what it really is, namely sex perversion which resulted from maladaptation and wrong friends, as well as influencing by films and videos in which gay relationships are positively presented.

Biblical denouncement of gay practices

The Bible calls this perverted relationship a sin. According to Romans 1, it emanates from wrong perceptions of God and human beings, and a life in which these wrong ideas are fully justified. This lifestyle is a clear form of rebellion against the Creator and causes Him to surrender such people to their evil desires. They become perverted – not only morally but also as far as their basic sexual orientation is concerned:

“Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lust of their hearts, to dishonour their bodies among themselves… God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting” (Rom. 1:24-28).

The Living Bible paraphrases this section as follows: “So God let them go ahead in every sort of sex sin, and do whatever they wanted to – yes, vile and sinful things with each other’s bodies… God let go of them and let them do all these evil things, so that even their women turned against God’s natural plan for them and indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having a normal sex relationship with women, burned with lust for each other, men doing shameful things with other men and, as a result, getting paid within their own souls with the penalty they so richly deserved. So it was that when they gave God up and would not even acknowledge Him, God gave them up to doing everything their evil minds could think of” (Rom. 1:24-28 LB).

However, gay persons often argue about the clear biblical denouncement of their evil lifestyle, trying to get past it and even to justify their practices. These are vain efforts. In their Bible Knowledge Commentary (p. 443-444), Profs. Walvoord & Zuck say the following on this Scripture: “One aspect of mankind’s corruption, to which God actively let people go, was sexual profligacy. The frequency of love-in lovers, wife swopping, and group sex parties today only confirms this result of God’s abandonment. Sex within marriage is a holy gift from God, but otherwise sex is impurity (lit., uncleanness) and the degrading of bodies by using them contrary to God’s intent… God gave them over to shameful lusts (lit., passions of disgrace). This involved, as the text states, both sexes engaging in homosexual instead of heterosexual relationships… The words translated women and men in these verses are the sexual words females and males. Contemporary homosexuals insist that these verses mean that it is perverse for a heterosexual male or female to engage in homosexual relations, but it is not perverse for a homosexual male or female to do so since homosexuality is such a person’s natural preference. This is strained exegesis unsupported by the Bible. The only natural sexual relationship the Bible recognizes is a heterosexual one (Gen. 2:21-24; Matt. 19:4-6) within marriage. All homosexual relations constitute sexual perversion and are subject to God’s judgement. Such lustful and indecent acts have within them the seeds of punishment (due penalty).”

Deliverance from these sins

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul says that a person can be delivered from this sin and purified by the Lord: “Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites… will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor. 6:9-11). Here we read of people who were sodomites, but their unrighteousness was forgiven, their sins were washed away by the blood of the Lamb, and they were sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Walvoord & Zuck (ibid, p. 516) comment as follows: “The list of offenders was similar to that noted earlier (1 Cor. 5:10-11), which no doubt corresponded to problems in Corinth and in other large cities of the day (cf. Eph. 5:3-6). Homosexuality and male prostitution, for example, were especially characteristic of Greco-Roman society. Plato lauded homosexual love in The Symposium. Nero, emperor at the time Paul wrote this letter, was about to marry the boy Sporus, an incident bizarre only in its formality, since 14 of the first 15 Roman emperors were homosexual or bisexual… Some, but not all, of the Corinthian Christians had been guilty of the sins listed in verses 9-10… but they were washed and sanctified.”

This is clear proof of the fact that those who are convicted of their sins and confess them to the Lord can be delivered and sanctified. In the USA, a group of about 800 former gays were delivered form this evil practice when they confessed it to the Lord Jesus as a sin. They published their testimony in a full-page newspaper advert. They are now heterosexual and many of them are happily married.

The full extent of this problem must be clearly explained to those who are overcome by it, namely that it is a sin which can drag them to hell. Then, the saving grace of the Lord Jesus must be proclaimed, who, by His blood, can cleanse a person of all sins – including unnatural sexual lusts and indulging in such practices. These sins must be confessed before the Lord: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). The Lord will never cast out a repentant sinner and send him or her away empty-handed (John 6:37), but break the bonds of sin. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

As a saved person, it may take some time to readjust yourself to the right, natural relationship with other people. The sinful practices became established by the force of habit, while completely dominating you and even twisting your personality and nature as a man or woman. Accept it as a challenge not to look back after you have broken with this sin at the cross of Jesus Christ. You must resist to bloodshed, striving against sin (Heb. 12), as Satan will keep on tempting you. He works through the uncrucified flesh, and that is the reason why we must surrender the flesh to be crucified (Gal. 6:14). We must also pray that the Lord will fill us with His Holy Spirit, thereby putting on His holy nature (Eph. 4:22-24). “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” (Gal. 5:16). “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (Gal. 5:1).

Live a normal life as a man or woman, according to God’s intent. Do not be drawn down into the mire of sin and unrighteousness by a permissive society. Never accept and allow sins by which you have become entangled in the past. Jesus Christ can set you free from all sin!
