Johan Malan is in Augustus 1978 as professor in Antropologie aan die Universiteit van die Noorde (tans die Universiteit van Limpopo) naby Polokwane in die Limpopo Provinsie van Suid-Afrika aangestel, en het in Januarie 2006 afgetree. Hy en sy vrou woon tans in Mosselbaai. Hulle het twee getroude seuns.

As die seun van ’n sendeling, wyle ds. J.S. Malan van die NG Kerk, het Johan tuis van jongs af deeglike Bybelse onderrig ontvang. Hy beskou homself as ’n evangeliese Christen wat die letterlike, grammaties-historiese vertolking van die Bybel voorstaan. As gevolg hiervan aanvaar hy ook die groot aantal Bybelse profesieë wat oor die letterlike herstel van die volk Israel in die land van hulle vaders handel.

As kulturele antropoloog het Johan en sy vrou het in 1993 verskeie kibboetse in Israel besoek, waar hy ’n studie van kommunale boerdery gemaak en ook twee artikels hieroor vir ’n wetenskaplike joernaal geskryf het (Malan, 1994, 1995). Gedurende hierdie tyd in Israel het hy met Messiaanse Jode kennis gemaak, en dit het daartoe gelei dat een van hulle later sy boek oor Israel in Russies vertaal het, hoofsaaklik vir verspreiding onder die groot aantal Russiessprekende Jode wat na Israel geëmigreer het. Besoeke aan Estland het ook tot die vertaling van hierdie boek in Estnies gelei.

Johan hou steeds tred met gebeure in Israel en bied hiermee ’n nuwe en uitgebreide weergawe van sy boek oor Israel aan.
