Johan Malan was professor in Antropologie aan die Universiteit van Limpopo. Hy het in 2006 afgetree en hy en sy vrou woon tans in Mosselbaai.
As die seun van ’n sendeling, wyle ds. J.S. Malan, het Johan ’n Christelike opvoeding gekry, maar eers as ’n jongman van 31 ’n ondervinding van wedergeboorte gehad. Hy het sy ou lewe van vleeslikheid versaak en die Here Jesus as Saligmaker aangeneem.
Ná sy antropologiese navorsing in Kaokoland in die noorde van Namibië, en ook ná sy bekering in 1972, het Johan ’n tyd lank as staatsetnoloog in Windhoek gewerk. Hy het in daardie stadium nog nie vrymoedigheid gehad om van sy geestelike ondervinding te getuig nie, en het besef dat daar nog iets in sy lewe kortkom voordat hy bekwaam sou wees om vir die Here te kan werk. Hy het Torrey se boek (Die Heilige Gees: Wie Hy is en wat Hy doen) bekom en homself ’n paar dae langs die weskus van Namibië gaan afsonder. Daar het hy die boek gelees en die Here vertrou vir hartsreiniging en vervulling met die Heilige Gees.
Hierná het sy geestelike groei sodanig toegeneem dat hy spoedig Bybelstudies vir ander gelowiges begin hou het. Later het hy Bybelverspreiding in die noordelike gebiede van Namibië gedoen – soms alleen en soms saam met Christenstudentegroepe uit Stellenbosch.
